The Client Who Walks In Can Differ From The One You Planned For
From the FASTER syllabus: this article is taught in full in Level 2 and Level 3 Personal Training, from scratch →

In short: FASTER's Level 2/3 personal training course (unit A/617/8597, criterion 6.6) teaches that the client you assess and write the programme for may not be the one who turns up to each session. Physical condition changes with a heavy week of manual labour, weekend sport or looking after grandchildren. Health condition changes with a cold, poor sleep or food choices. Equipment can be busy or missing, and a client may want to use a session to de-stress. A new trainer learns to ask first, then adapt the planned session to the client in front of them.
The short version
Anyone leaving another career to become a personal trainer wants to know one thing about the job: once the programme is written, can they actually deliver it? One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is a calm answer. The client you assess and write the programme for might not be the one who turns up each session, and you can learn exactly what to look for.
Key Takeaways
- The course says the client who turns up may differ from the one you assessed.
- The reasons sit on a short list: physical condition, health condition, equipment and goals.
- Adapting the session is part of delivering a good programme.
What the course puts on the list
The unit on delivering exercise programmes gives four reasons to adapt a session on the day:
- Physical condition. A heavy week of manual labour, house renovations, a long weekend bike ride, weekend sport or a few days looking after grandchildren can all change how fresh the client is when they walk in.
- Health condition. A cold, a night of poor sleep or a few days of different food, for a special occasion or a religious reason.
- Availability of equipment. The gym may be busy on a Monday night or in the first week of January, have equipment out of use, or remove equipment altogether.
- Change in goals. A client may want to use the session to de-stress, or want the next few sessions to get ready for something new.
Nothing on it asks for a medical background. It asks you to notice, and the course frames that as assessing the client's state of readiness and motivation.
Ask first, then adapt
The course sits this next to the pre-exercise screen, a few quick questions before the workout starts. The answers tell you whether to run the plan as written, trim it, swap an exercise or change the aim of the hour. A new trainer who has this routine can walk into a first session with a plan and a way to adjust it.
The plan is a starting point
A programme is a good guess made on assessment day. The client's week then happens to it. Trainers who adapt well keep the intent of the session and change the means: the same movement pattern on a different piece of kit, the same aim at a lower or higher effort. That is a skill with a short list behind it, which is good news for someone who has never trained a client before.

Frequently asked
Does a new trainer have to rewrite the programme every session?
No. The course asks you to know when it is necessary to adapt the plan, and the reasons are on a short list: physical condition, health condition, equipment and a change in goals.
Is adapting a session a sign the programme was wrong?
No. The course says the client you assessed may not be the one who turns up, so adapting is part of delivering a good programme.
