The Stretch-Shortening Cycle Is Three Steps: Load, Pause, Unload

In short: The stretch-shortening cycle is the process of lengthening a muscle and then shortening it immediately after, to produce power. FASTER's Level 3 personal training course (K/617/8594, criterion 4.8) teaches it in three parts: eccentric lengthening at pace, a pause where the direction changes, and a rapid concentric shortening. The course names these Load, Amortisation and Unload (or explode). Plyometrics is the usual way to train it, and the course says it is the main way we produce power.

The short version

Anyone starting a personal training qualification who left school glad to leave will meet the phrase "stretch-shortening cycle" in the anatomy unit and wonder if the whole course reads like that. It doesn't. The phrase is three steps. A muscle lengthens, there is a pause where the direction changes, and the muscle shortens fast. One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is that sequence, and it is far easier to see than to say.

Key Takeaways

  • The stretch-shortening cycle is lengthening a muscle and then shortening it straight after, to produce power.
  • The course teaches three parts: load, pause (amortisation), unload.
  • Plyometrics is the usual way to train it.
  • PT Manager opens when you sign up, with a Live Analyser to practise watching it from.

The three steps

The Level 3 anatomy unit (K/617/8594, criterion 4.8) describes the cycle like this:

  1. Eccentric lengthening of the muscle, done at pace. This is the load.
  2. A pause where the direction changes. This is the amortisation.
  3. A rapid concentric shortening of the muscle. This is the unload, or the explode.

Think of a small jump. You drop into a quarter squat, you turn round at the bottom, and you leave the floor. Each of the three steps is in there, and you have already done it hundreds of times without a name for it.

Why it earns its place in the course

The course says the stretch-shortening cycle is the main way we produce power, so it turns up in everyday activity as well as sport. The lengthening part stores energy and gets the body's sensors excited, which lets the muscle produce power faster than a plain shortening contraction would.

That is a lot of science to carry round. You don't have to. The industry makes a big deal of it because it rarely gives trainers a way to see it. Once you can watch the load, the pause and the unload happen in a person, the vocabulary stops being the hard part.

Where plyometrics fits

The course names plyometrics as the most regular use of the cycle in training: bounding exercises, often on and off boxes of different heights. As functional training areas have spread, they have become common in ordinary gyms. Knowing the three steps means you can describe what a bound is doing to the person doing it, which is what a client hears as expertise.

Why the course is built this way

Learning on FASTER is visual, interactive and multi-modal: read it, listen to it, write your answers or dictate them from your phone. The anatomy is taught so it can be seen moving. PT Manager is free for students and opens the moment you sign up. Its Live Analyser lays a skeleton over a person while they move, so the load and the unload are on the screen. Adding real clients unlocks once you pass.
