Red Flags in Workouts: A Trainer's Guide to Keeping Your Clients Safe

Important: this course is for information only. It does not make you a medical professional or qualify you to diagnose. It does not replace first aid, CPR and defibrillator training or any other training your role requires, and on its own it does not give you the right to take on clients with medical conditions or other higher-risk clients. Red Flags in Workouts teaches personal trainers to spot the signs that mean a client must stop exercising, or must not start, and what to do next. It was written because a trainer in the United States was sued after a client told him he felt dizzy and his vision had blurred, and he kept the session going. The client had a torn artery in his neck and went on to have a stroke. You learn what actually happens in the body in each emergency, so the warning signs make sense: cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, a torn neck artery, low and high blood sugar, asthma, anaphylaxis, heat illness, rhabdomyolysis, low blood sodium, exertional sickling and the warning signs in pregnancy. You also learn the slow red flags, such as back pain that is not muscular, why trainers cannot fix pain, and what the evidence says about popular pain techniques. It covers screening, the check-in before every session, keeping online and home clients safe when they train alone, insurance and the law, CPR and defibrillators to Resuscitation Council UK guidance, and when to call 999. Written for the UK, with guidance on where to look if you train elsewhere. Free from FASTER. Seven modules, each lesson checked with multiple-choice questions. Thank you to Casey Noble for raising this issue and for the inspiration behind this course.

Who this is for

Before and after

You, before

A trainer who screens new clients loosely or not at all, pushes through when a client says they feel off, and may have been taught that they can fix pain, without knowing which symptoms mean stop now, see a doctor, or call 999.

You, after

A trainer who screens every client, checks in before every session, recognises the red flags of serious illness during and outside training, knows what is happening in the body and why it matters, and acts at once: stop, refer or call 999.
