A Client Doesn't Stop Coming Because They're Lazy, They Stop For One Of Four Reasons

In short: Level 3 teaches four categories of barrier that stop a client exercising: physical (not fit enough yet, general health, an old setback still being worked around), emotional (low confidence, low self-esteem, fear of the unknown), motivational (finding exercise boring or unenjoyable, past bad experiences) and time (work, tiredness, family, the belief a session has to run an hour). Each needs a different strategy, and the course is specific that none of them is found by guessing, they're found through open-ended questions, summaries and clarifications in the client consultation itself. A trainer who treats every drop-off as laziness is answering all four categories with the one strategy that fits none of them.

The question this answers

Not "how do I motivate a client," but "which of four different things is stopping this one." Level 3 sorts every reason a client drifts off into four categories, and treating a time barrier with a strategy built for an emotional one is why the drift-off happens anyway.

The one people assume is one thing

Somebody weighing up a career change into personal training has probably heard "clients just don't stick with it" said like it's a single problem, usually with the word lazy hanging somewhere nearby. One of the things you learn on our CIMSPA-recognised personal training course is that it's never one problem. It's one of four, and they call for four different answers.

The four, in the course's own words

Physical. Not fit enough yet, a previous injury, poor health. This one calls for a programme that meets the body where it is.

Emotional. Low confidence, low self-esteem, a fear of the unknown walking into a gym for the first time. This one calls for reassurance before it calls for a single exercise.

Motivational. A belief that exercise is boring, that it isn't enjoyable, or a bad experience somewhere in the past that's still doing the talking. This one calls for finding something the client wants to do, not more willpower.

Time. Too busy at work, too tired from it, a family pulling in every direction, or the belief that a session has to eat an hour to count. This one calls for a session that fits the week the client has.

Why guessing gets the wrong one

A trainer who assumes every quiet client is dealing with a time barrier will hand them a shorter session and miss that the real issue was walking through the door feeling unsure of themselves. The course is direct about how the real barrier gets found: open-ended questions, summaries and clarifications, in the consultation, before a single exercise gets written down.

What this does to the first conversation

A trainer who's run this before the programme exists knows which of the four they're solving for, which means the first programme fits the barrier instead of a guess at it. Same client, same goal on the intake form, a different plan built on which of the four is in the way.

Frequently asked

Are these barriers something a trainer has to guess at?

No, the course is specific about the opposite: they're found through open-ended questions, summaries and clarifications in the client consultation, not assumed from how someone looks or talks.

Can a client have more than one barrier at once?

Yes, a client who's too tired from work and low on confidence is carrying a time barrier and an emotional one together, and a strategy built for only one of them will miss the other.

Does finishing the course get me PT Manager?

Yes. PT Manager opens the moment you sign up with FASTER, and adding real clients unlocks once you pass a course.
