What Muscles Work In A Single-Leg Overhead Reach, And How To Work It Out For Any Exercise

In short: A single-leg overhead reach is held up by the standing leg's glute medius and minimus, lengthening as the pelvis tries to drop toward the unsupported side and then contracting to keep it level. The small muscles around the standing ankle assist by making constant tiny corrections, and the obliques help control the trunk as the arms reach overhead. The deep core, particularly the transverse abdominis and multifidus, supports the spine against the overhead reach pulling it into extension, and the shoulder stabilisers, the rotator cuff and lower trapezius, keep the shoulder blades under control rather than winging. The four steps that produce that answer are: decide where the force is acting, find the muscles working directly against it, find the muscles assisting, then find the muscles supporting the joint, the same four steps that already answered the same question about a squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop and a bird dog.

What muscles work in a single-leg overhead reach

The glute medius and minimus of the standing leg, lengthening as the pelvis tries to tip toward the unsupported side and then contracting to hold it level. The small muscles around the standing ankle, making constant tiny corrections to keep the foot from rolling. The obliques, helping control the trunk as both arms reach overhead. And the deep core and the shoulder stabilisers, the core resisting the way an overhead reach pulls the spine toward extension, the rotator cuff and lower trapezius keeping the shoulder blades under control rather than winging out.

That's the answer, and like the squat, the lunge, the deadlift, the press-up, the row, the shoulder press, the loaded carry, the suspended plank, the sprint, the medicine ball throw, the vertical jump, the kettlebell swing, the band wood chop and the bird dog before it, it came from a method rather than a memorised list.

Somebody weighing up a career change into personal training can watch someone balance on one leg with their arms overhead and file the whole thing under "core," which tells them nothing about the standing leg's glute medius doing the actual job of keeping the pelvis level. A squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop and a bird dog have all run through the same four steps:

  1. Decide where the force is acting on the body
  2. Identify which muscles work directly against that force (muscles that lengthen are easiest to see)
  3. Identify which secondary muscles assist that movement
  4. Identify which muscles would support that joint / movement

Run it on a single-leg overhead reach.

One, where is the force acting? Sideways through the pelvis, because standing on one leg removes the second point of support that usually shares the job of keeping the hips level.

Two, what works directly against it? The glute medius and minimus of the standing leg, lengthening as the unsupported side of the pelvis drops and then contracting to pull it back level.

Three, what assists? The small muscles around the standing ankle, correcting the tiniest shifts in balance moment to moment, and the obliques, helping keep the trunk under control as the arms lift overhead.

Four, what supports? The deep core, resisting the way reaching overhead pulls the spine toward extension, and the shoulder stabilisers, holding the shoulder blades in place so the reach doesn't collapse into a shrug.

Why that fourth answer changes how it's coached

A trainer who only knows "single-leg work is for balance" has nothing specific to watch when a client's standing hip drops on every rep. A trainer who's run the four steps knows that's the glute medius losing the job it's built for, and can build toward it directly instead of guessing at drills that might help.

Point it at anything

A single-leg deadlift reach, where the same standing-leg hip work happens with the trunk hinging forward instead of staying upright. A step-up onto a low box, where the standing leg does the same job for a shorter moment on the way up. A single-arm suspended row, where a one-sided pull gives the same standing-leg muscles a rotational force to resist instead of a vertical one. Any single-leg movement a client already does can be answered the same way, without a new list to learn.
