What Muscles Work In A Single-Leg Deadlift, And How To Work It Out For Any Exercise

In short: A single-leg deadlift is held together by the hamstring and glute of the standing leg, lengthening as the hip folds forward and the free leg reaches back to counterbalance it, and the erector spinae down the same side of the spine, holding the forward lean without letting it round. The glute medius and deep hip rotators of the standing leg work with the core to stop the hip and knee wobbling sideways, a job a two-footed deadlift shares across both legs but a single-leg version asks of one. The four steps that produce that answer are: decide where the force is acting, find the muscles working directly against it (the ones lengthening are easiest to see), find the secondary muscles assisting, then find the muscles supporting the joint. The same four steps already answered the same question about a squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop, a bird dog, a single-leg overhead reach, a hip hinge, a lateral lunge, a lateral shuffle and a split squat.
What muscles work in a single-leg deadlift
The hamstring and glute of the standing leg, lengthening as the hip folds forward and the free leg reaches back to counterbalance it. The erector spinae down the same side of the spine, holding the torso's forward lean without letting it round. And the glute medius and deep hip rotators of the standing leg, working with the deep core to stop the hip and knee wobbling sideways, because for the whole rep there is only one foot on the ground to share that job.
That's the answer, and like the squat, the lunge, the deadlift, the press-up, the row, the shoulder press, the loaded carry, the suspended plank, the sprint, the medicine ball throw, the vertical jump, the kettlebell swing, the band wood chop, the bird dog, the single-leg overhead reach, the hip hinge, the lateral lunge, the lateral shuffle and the split squat before it, it came from a method rather than a memorised list.
Nobody's taken a client yet, and that's fine
Somebody weighing up a career change into personal training can watch a client balance on one leg and reach for the floor and file it under "a wobbly deadlift," missing that the wobble is the whole point: the glute medius and hip rotators of the standing leg are doing a stabilising job a two-footed deadlift never asks for. A squat, a lunge, a deadlift, a press-up, a row, a shoulder press, a loaded carry, a suspended plank, a sprint, a medicine ball throw, a vertical jump, a kettlebell swing, a band wood chop, a bird dog, a single-leg overhead reach, a hip hinge, a lateral lunge, a lateral shuffle and a split squat have all run through the same four steps:
- Decide where the force is acting on the body
- Identify which muscles work directly against that force (muscles that lengthen are easiest to see)
- Identify which secondary muscles assist that movement
- Identify which muscles would support that joint / movement
Run it on a single-leg deadlift.
One, where is the force acting? At the hip of the standing leg, folding forward as the torso tips toward the floor, and at that same foot, which now carries the entire base of support alone.
Two, what works directly against it? The hamstring and glute of the standing leg, lengthening as the hip hinges forward under the bodyweight tipping over it.
Three, what assists? The erector spinae down the same side of the spine, holding the torso's forward lean steady rather than letting it round under the stretch. The free leg's hip flexors and glute, working to swing the leg back and keep it there as a counterweight for the whole rep.
Four, what supports? The glute medius and deep hip rotators of the standing leg, along with the deep core and obliques, stopping the hip and knee rolling sideways under a load with no second foot to share it.
Why that fourth answer changes how it's coached
A trainer who only knows "keep your hips square" has nothing specific to watch when a client's standing knee starts drifting inward halfway through the set. A trainer who's run the four steps knows that's the glute medius losing its grip on the hip, and can cue the exact muscle instead of repeating a squareness cue that was never going to fix a strength problem.
Point it at anything
A single-leg deadlift holding a kettlebell in the opposite hand, where the same standing-leg sequence has to work harder against the added twist. A single-leg box touch, where the standing leg's hip and knee have to control the same folding motion on the way down to a lower target. A single-leg landing after a hop, where the glute medius has a fraction of a second to do the job it usually gets a whole rep to set up. Any exercise built on one foot carrying the entire base of support can be answered the same way, without a new list to learn.

How is a single-leg deadlift different from an ordinary deadlift?
An ordinary deadlift shares the job of stabilising the hips and knees across two feet on the ground. A single-leg deadlift gives that whole job to one standing leg, which is why the glute medius and deep hip rotators work so much harder even though the hinge itself looks the same.
Why does the free leg matter if it's not touching the ground?
The free leg reaching back is what balances the torso tipping forward, the same job a see-saw's other end does — take it away and the standing leg has to fight for balance instead of just hinging.
